Weird Thing #3 Send out birthday party invitations two months in advance
Okay, we know, a lot of people do this. (We have done this!) But super advanced planning is weird because it: reveals just how obsessed you are with this particular event; assumes that other people care as much about your toddler’s coming of age as you do; falsely presumes people will actually save a date for your kid if you give them proper notice. Guess what, NOBODY SAVES THE DATE FOR A KID’S BIRTHDAY PARTY! Normal people do not necessarily know what they’re doing on a Sunday at 12:00 another season from now.

yes! We’ve all done it! I know when it was my kids’ first birthday everything was planned to a tee! Personalized invites with the cute colorful decorative border included. Now, the 8th birthday is only weeks away and I haven’t even started!
Comment by Renee — May 13, 2009oh, sounds VERY familiar. The hurt feelings when people didn’t respond weeks ahead…!
Comment by Natasha — May 13, 2009I just got a “save the date” for a 6 year old party 3 months out!
Comment by Kanani — May 13, 2009I sent out my son’s invitation about a month in advance but then my RSVP deadline came and went and only 2 people had responded! So I actually printed up a flier to be put in each classmate’s folder to “remind” the parents of the party. I was envisioning my grown-up son on the psychiatrists’ couch one day saying, “it all started when no one showed up for my 6th birthday party…”
Pet Peeve: at least respond - that’s what RSVP means! Let me know - give me a head count so I don’t have to pay $100 to have overnight shipping on party favors!
Comment by Julie — May 14, 2009My favorite invite came as a phone call about an hour before the b-day event. This mom was even more disorganized than me!
Comment by Chris — May 14, 2009I agree with the RSVP pet peeve…every birthday I end up having to call parents to see if they are coming to my kid’s birthday parties. I mean is it really that difficult to look at a calendar and call someone to let them know whether or not they will attend? And another BIG pet peeve of mine is bringing siblings. I have two girls, 17 months apart and unless both their names are on a birthday invite I don’t bring them both to a party. Many of the parties I have are a per child charge of $15 - $20 so it can get pretty expensive with unexpected siblings attending!
Comment by Tanja — May 14, 2009LoL…i agree that it’s crazy for to have “save the date” for kids parties. However, it’s also crazy for parents to wait until the last minute to give out invitations. I have a party invitation website and we had a mom order invitations THE DAY OF the party.
